The MD (MBBS) Program at GRUNI

A single-cycle, six-year Doctor of Medicine degree, taught in English, carrying 360 ECTS credits across 12 semesters.

What the degree is called, and why

Indian students search for GRUNI using the word MBBS, and that is the right program to look at. The official qualification, though, is the Doctor of Medicine, or MD, awarded on a single-cycle basis in line with the European model. It is the direct equivalent of the Indian MBBS and prepares you to sit licensing examinations and practise as a physician once you clear the exam that applies to where you want to work.

The program is built on 360 ECTS credits spread over 12 semesters, with each semester running about 19 weeks. One credit represents roughly 25 hours of work, split evenly between taught contact time and independent study, so the degree is demanding in the way a medical course should be.

Two stages, foundation then clinical

The course is organised into two stages. The first is a short Initial Medical Stage of one semester that lays down the core principles and vocabulary of biomedical science and introduces the human organ systems. The much longer Clinical Medical Stage, of eleven semesters, is disease-oriented: you apply that basic science to clinical medicine, build practical skills, and take part in clerkships in affiliated clinical settings.

Throughout, the teaching follows the competencies set out by the World Federation for Medical Education and the European Tuning framework, with an emphasis on clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice rather than rote recall.

Clinical simulation laboratory at Grigol Robakidze University

Learning on a simulator before a patient

One of the practical strengths Indian students mention is the university's simulation teaching. Before you work with real patients, you practise examinations and procedures on simulators and manikins, which builds confidence and reduces the gap between theory and the ward. Paired with early clinical placement, it means you spend less time as a passive listener and more time doing the work of a clinician.
