About Grigol Robakidze University
A private university in Tbilisi, named for one of Georgia's great writers, with a medical school that now draws students from across India and beyond.
Grigol Robakidze University opened in Tbilisi in 1992 and took the name of Grigol Robakidze, the Georgian poet, novelist, and thinker. From the beginning it set out to be a serious private institution rather than a large state college, and over three decades it has grown into a university of roughly 2,800 students with schools spanning medicine, law, business, and the social sciences.
Medicine is where GRUNI has made its international name. The School of Medicine runs a single-cycle Medical Doctor program, the degree most Indian families recognise as MBBS, taught entirely in English for international students. The teaching model leans on early clinical exposure and case-based learning rather than lecture halls alone, and the university has invested in simulation facilities so students practise skills before they reach real patients.
The institution's motto, Scientia et Veritas, knowledge and truth, sits on a crest of four quarters and a ring of stars. It is a fitting emblem for a university that has spent recent years deepening its ties with the wider academic world: GRUNI is a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum, a member of European education associations, and has earned a four-star rating in the international QS Stars assessment.
A university in a European capital
Tbilisi is a city of about a million and a half people, set along the Mtkvari river at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. For Indian students it is an unusually comfortable place to study medicine: the cost of living is modest, the climate runs through four real seasons, and direct and one-stop flights connect the city to Mumbai, Delhi, and other Indian hubs.
GRUNI's faculties sit in the downtown of the city, with a newer building in a quieter suburb near the United States Embassy. International students live in dedicated hostel accommodation, with Indian mess food available so the move abroad does not also mean a change of diet.
