Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions Indian families ask most about studying MBBS at Grigol Robakidze University.
Is Grigol Robakidze University recognised for Indian students?
GRUNI is accredited in Georgia by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, and its School of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with School ID F0006533. For Indian students, the six-year English-medium MD is structured to meet the National Medical Commission's FMGL 2021 criteria. We avoid the loose claims seen on some websites, because the NMC does not formally approve or endorse individual foreign universities; you should confirm the current criteria on nmc.org.in before you apply.
What is the full name of GRUNI?
GRUNI stands for Grigol Robakidze University, a private university in Tbilisi, Georgia, named after the Georgian poet and thinker Grigol Robakidze. It was established in 1992.
Is the MBBS at GRUNI taught in English?
Yes. The MD program, which Indian students know as MBBS, is taught and examined in English for international students from the first year to the last.
Do I need IELTS or TOEFL to join?
No. Entry to the first year of the medical program does not require IELTS or TOEFL. Indian students do need a valid NEET result.
How long is the course, and what degree do I get?
The course runs six years and carries 360 ECTS credits across 12 semesters. On completion you are awarded the Doctor of Medicine, the MD, which is the equivalent of the Indian MBBS.
Can GRUNI graduates take the USMLE and work in the United States?
GRUNI's World Directory listing carries an ECFMG sponsor note, which means students and graduates are eligible to apply for ECFMG Certification, the route to the USMLE and US residency. Clearing those examinations is still up to the individual student.
Will I be able to practise in India after GRUNI?
To practise medicine in India you must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, which is moving to the National Exit Test, and complete the registration steps the NMC sets. No university abroad can waive that exam; a strong clinical course prepares you to pass it.
